Update: No Lives were lost at the Onitsha Fire Outbreak, Govt. Seals Affected Stations for Violation of Public Safety

Inland Town in the metropolitan city of Onitsha experienced a life threatening fire outbreak on Sunday evening, when 2 petroleum stations caught fire and was razed to the ground. Luckily no lives were lost but several properties including apartment buildings and cars were affected. 

 
 

Confirming the fire outbreak to LatestNGnews.com on Monday, the Anambra state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga in statement disclosed that;

 

At about 8pm, information was received at Inland Police Station Onitsha, that there was a fire outbreak at Silver filling station, along the Onitsha/Enugu expressway by Awka Road, Onitsha

 
 

“An unconfirmed source had it that a truck with petroleum product caught fire inside the filling station while awaiting discharge.

 
 

“The DPO Inland Town Police Station quickly contacted the Fire Service, and equally went to the scene with Police operatives, who cordoned it off in order to mitigate casualty and prevent hoodlums taking advantage of the scenario to loot.”

 
 

Governor Obiano who visited the scenes of the fire outbreak on Monday announced that the affected petrol and cooking gas filling stations are confiscated and are now government properties.

 
 

Gov. Obiano just as several residents who spoke to LatestNGnew.com on Sunday, at the night of the incident, condemned the establishment of cooking gas and petrol filling stations at the same location, he called it a nonchalant attitude on the parts of the business owners, citing that they neglected public safety. In his words;

 

Gas plants and fuel stations are no supposed to be in the same location, but we will always thank thank God because no life was lost during the fire incident.

 
 

I also want to commend the Anambra State fire service and other security agencies for their timely response. “I have, however, directed the immediate sealing off of both fuel stations and ordered that it be taken over by the state government.”
