Chu Okonguwu Former finance minister Under the Military Regime, Dies at 87

Dr. Chu SP Okonguwu, a Former finance minister Under the Military Regime, Dies at 87. He was a former Minister of Finance under the regime of the military dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida, from 1986 to 1990.

 

Born on September 23, 1934, in Nnewi, Anambra State, Chu, was  the first of eight children of his parents, he passed on  Wednesday at the age of 87, in Enugu.

 

President Buhari amongst other, mourned and sent his condolence to his family. This was obtained in a statement by Femi Adesina, presidential Special Adviser on Media, which reads;

 

“The President joins family, friends and associates in paying tribute to a man of many parts, who never hesitated to give his best to Nigeria as a broadcaster with the Nigerian Broadcasting Service, sub-editor, Daily Times Nigeria, Lecturer, University of Nigeria and a Federal Minister of National Planning and later Finance.”

 

Also reacting to the passing of Dr. Chu SP Okonguwu, 2023 presidential aspirant who is also from Nnewi, same town as Dr Chu, posted via his verified Twitter page, saying;

 

The death of Dr. Chu S.P. Okongwu (“Dunu”) is the falling of an Iroko. He served in succession as Minister of National Planning, Finance and Regrettably,

 

his home in Nnewi (our shared hometown) was burnt down by “unknown gunmen” late last year, and he sent me the photos of the tragedy, which distressed him heavily.

 
 

I was close to him, and feel a personal sense of loss Petroleum in the Military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s government, and was a Permanent Secretary in charge of Economic Planning in
